11^th Annual Wilmington & Western Railroad’s

Hockessin Arts Festival

Friday, Saturday and Sunday, February 24^th,25^th,26th

at Hockessin Memorial Hall.

Thousands of eager people will again be able to attend, view quality art and be able to purchase their personal treasures!

The Wilmington & Western Railroad’s Hockessin Arts Festival is a fundraising effort to benefit the Railroad, a local non-profit organization. The all-volunteer Railroad operates steam and diesel-powered locomotives thru the Red Clay Valley.

30% of all sales will go directly to the operation of the Wilmington & Western Railroad. 302-998-1930

The 2010 Wilmington & Western Railroad’s Hockessin Arts Festival is being held at the Hockessin Memorial Hall located on Route 41 in Hockessin, DE

29 artists will be displaying and selling original works as well as prints, greeting cards and more. A wide range of styles and prices will be available.

Admission each day is $3.00 for adults and free for those under 12.

Something I have always shared with friends, Dessert for Breakfast, because you have all day to work it off. Next time you go out for dinner, get your dessert to go. Who wants to eat dessert at night, it just sits in your belly like a lump of dough with nowhere to go.

Waking up in the morning puts a smile on your face just knowing you have dessert in the fridge waiting for you to eat. Research Studies reveal it jump starts your metabolism, so Go on, try it, Dessert for breakfast, what a way to start the day!

Why is it, if you arrive 15 minutes late to a doctor appointment they make you reschedule and you

know they are backed up anyway. Now if you are punctual and arrive on time, they make you wait 2 hours in the waiting room reading all the magazines other sick people have touched. Sitting for hours in those uncomfortable chairs with frustration stewing beyond belief, the nurse opens the door. We all look at her with excitement in our eyes wondering if she will yell your name. The nurse calls out, “Mr. Quindlen”, Finally, it’s you. You stand right up to attention with a half ass smile on your face, because you don’t want to piss off the doctor and have them place an asterick next to your name saying you were an uncooperative patient.

Now you are excited because you are going behind the closed-door beyond the waiting room. You gather up your belongings and you walk with a pep in your step, but disappointment soon follows when you find out the nurse is only taking your vitals. You then proceed to go back out in the waiting room and wait another 45 minutes til you see the doctor. Although, once back out in the waiting room you find your seat has been taken and now you must stand until the next patient is called.

Finally, the nurse calls your name for the second time, you Again gather your belongings and walk sluggishly to the exam room, only to wait another 15 minutes til you see the doctor. The doctor walks in and asks you, “How are the med treating you, Do you have any new symptoms”? Well, lets run some tests and I’ll see you back in a month. GREAT, we get to do this all over again next month. The visit with the doctor only lasted 10 minutes. We got there at 9am and we left after 2pm, we’re starving, had to fast for blood work and now it’s too late for lunch to be served…..that’s our American Medical system.

Footnote, Don’t forget to bring your own book and a snack for the ride home.

Do you remember Encyclopedias? There is a generation out there who has no idea what I am talking about. Encyclopedia (en si klo pe de a), is a book or set of books with alphabetically arranged articles on all branches of knowledge. I can remember when my Dad bought a set of Collier’s Encyclopedias for our family, it was in the 80′s when I was in high school. I was so excited to get these books because I spent so much time researching in the library and I now I could do my research right from home. Dad ordered it on a payment plan, which meant we received three books each month. Now that is fine if you are doing a report on Art History or Civil Engineering, but if your Social Studies required you to do a report on South America, by the time SOD-TZU volume 18 came in, it would be summer. Can you believe I still have the whole collection of Collier’s… I wonder if they are worth any money? I still use them to this day but, not in the way you would think. After I am finished a watercolor painting, I spray a light mist of water on the back of the painting and then lay the encyclopedias down as a weight to flatten the paper and remove any buckling that may have occurred. On a large painting I use the entire 20 volume set….My Dad would be so proud that his hard earned money did not go in vain. Thank you Collier’s Encyclopedia for the many years of knowledge!

Coldest Weekend of the Season and I’m Pocono Bound…YEAH!

Getting comp tickets for skiing, Love it! This will be my first time skiing since I was 12 years old skiing on the Bunny Hill with Sally. I don’t remember too much from that skiing trip, however, I Do remember us snowmobiling. Here’s two young 12 year olds who can’t weigh 80 pounds, and the owners of the snowmobile rentals said we were to light to ride by ourselves, surprising enough, even to us, we convinced them to give us our own vehicle……Big Mistake! As we are riding down the snow paths, Sally is in front of me and within the first three minutes runs into a tree. I am laughing my ass off and soon I am wrap myself around a tree. The instructors removed our vehicles from the tree and now were off and running….don’t you know we did it again two minutes later, they removed the vehicles from the tree, Again! Finally we are out of the path and into open snowy fields. I absolutely loved feeling the cold wind in your hair, on your face and in your teeth, Yes teeth, because I was laughing so much!

About an hour goes by, and our time has run out so we need to return the snowmobiles. I remember how bad it was to maneuver through the paths so I decided to take a short cut back to the office. I saw an open hill that had only one obstacle…a clothes line full of clothes and sheets. I saw everyone down at the office waiving to me so I ventured on down. They were actually waiving for me NOT to come down this way. In my head, I saw them saying, “Come on down”. So here I am with excitement flying down the hill, when all of a sudden I hit a bump and my snowmobile veered in the direction of the clothesline…. I was out of control! I got entangled in the clothesline and was trailing fresh laundry behind me. What a sight this must have been, a scared 12 year old on a snowmobile with sheets and underwear flying in the wind and everyone chasing me. I returned the snowmobile to the office and they asked me Not to return.

I hope I don’t disappoint my friends on this ski trip.

My Hands, Eyes and Soul are Excited to start a new painting!

In order for me to start a new painting I must have order in the studio. First, I wipe down my table and put away all my brushes and paint I used during the last piece I was painting. Then I get out a clean sheet of watercolor paper, T-Square, triangles and erasers, sharpen my pencils, have my photographs ready for reference, and select my new group of music for the cd player. Now I am ready!

I stare at a Blank piece of paper, the ideas one gets from staring at white paper is incredible! First thing that pops into my head is the composition, then how large do I want to go, where is my horizon, I wonder if the Phillies are playing tonight, wow, it sure is a beautiful day outside…oops I got to get back to my painting, what color will I make the sky…..oooh, I love this song, I think I’ll dance now! -beth palser
